Travel back in time to the reverberant cathedrals of Spain and envelop yourself in the polyphonic splendor of Tomás Luis de Victoria’s austere Officium defunctorum (Requiem of 1605), a crown jewel of the Spanish High Renaissance. Then cross the Atlantic to the intimate missions of the New World where the traditions of old entwined with vibrant melodies and buoyant rhythms to weave the musical fabric of the Mexican Baroque. The program will include the opening movement from La púrpura de la rosa (The Blood of the Rose), the first opera written in the New World.
Listen Up! pre-concert conversation with Grant Gershon and KUSC’s Alan Chapman — Sun, Feb 10 at 6 pm in BP Hall at Walt Disney Concert Hall. Free to concert attendees.
“It was the Master Chorale, stripped of any instrumental accompaniment, that was on display for a rapt audience hungering for the level of a cappella magnificence that has elevated this choir above the rest over many years. The Master Chorale and their intrepid leader were rewarded by well-deserved loud cheers, sustained applause and a standing ovation by a grateful audience.” — Beverly Hills Outlook
