Calling all princesses (and princes, too). Composer David O is creating musical arrangements from your favorite Disney cartoons in this hour-long, fun-filled concert for the entire family.
“I find the evolution of the Disney heroine fascinating — a true reflection of what we as a society find heroic in women, from the 1930s to the present,” says David. “This journey is most vividly illustrated in song.”
“From Snow White’s innocent dream that ‘Someday My Prince Will Come’ to Pocahontas’ nonconformist desire to explore the world ‘Just Around The Riverbend,’ we find a whole spectrum of young women’s dreams for better lives. ‘A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes’ (from Cinderella) and ‘Part Of Your World’ (from The Little Mermaid) give us windows into the dreams of girls trapped by their elders and tradition, praying for escape.
“Finally, Sleeping Beauty’s ‘Once Upon A Dream’ allows us a chance to experience the fairy-tale romance of falling in love at first sight. By linking these classic songs together with ‘When You Wish Upon A Star,’ I have attempted to highlight what these princesses have in common, that when they apply courage and determination to the pursuit of their objectives, their dreams do indeed come true.
“I hope that Princess Dreams will accomplish what Disney is known best for, moving us to laughter and tears, and I also hope it will remind us of the heroic accomplishments of women in the 20th Century, both fictional and real.”
