“From the heart — may it go to the heart.” Beethoven penned these words for the Mass he regarded as his greatest single achievement. Written along with the Ninth Symphony in his last decade of life, the Missa solemnis encapsulates Beethoven's profound humility in the face of adversity. Undefeated by years of suffering, he found music for words of hope.
