Haydn + Messiaen
Sunday, May 3, 2009
PROGRAM:
- Messiaen | Trois petites liturgies
- Franz Joseph Haydn | Heilig Mass
A MINUTE WITH THE MAESTRO!
Listen to our Music Director Grant Gershon talk a little about this upcoming concert
On the surface, these two works couldn't be more different — Haydn's Heilig Mass is a celebration of bright melodies and frugal development, whereas Trois petites liturgies for women's voices is Messiaen's ethereal, emotional, and quintessentially French choral masterpiece. What they share, though, is their meticulous skill and beauty in composition as well as their spiritual underpinnings that are both personal and universal. Their mixture of musical experimentation — such as Haydn's pioneering use of silence to create drama and Messiaen's use of one of the first electronic instruments, the ondes martenot — creating a truly magical evening of craftsmanship and emotion.
This concert is made possible, in part, by a grant from The National Endowment for the Arts. The performance of the Heilig Mass is made possible, in part, by a grant from the E. Nakamichi Foundation.
